• Serve as an informational resource.
• Help to develop a plan with your physician and other health care professionals for a controlled setting during and following birth.
• Possibly be present when your baby is born to provide emotional, educational, and physical support for you, your baby, your loved ones, and hospital staff.
• Provide the ability for you to stay with your baby during the precious minutes, hours, or days of life, so that your time with your child is a meaningful experience. 
• Help to arrange for ritual or ceremony (baptism, religious blessing, memorial, funeral).
